La Ruzzola is a traditional Italian throwing game with roots stretching back hundreds of years. Written records show that it was already being played in many Italian regions during the 14th and 15th centuries.
The game is played outdoors, usually along roads or open routes. Players use a wooden disc measuring approximately 13 cm in diameter and weighing around 700 grams. A string is wrapped around the disc and secured to the player’s index finger. When the disc is thrown, the string unwinds and gives it a powerful spinning motion, helping it travel as far as possible.
La Ruzzola can be played individually, in pairs, in groups of three, or as a team event. The aim is simple: cover the greatest distance using a set number of throws, usually ten. In some competitions, the winner is the first player or team to win five rounds.
It is a game of technique, power, and precision — and every throw can take the competition in a completely new direction.
