Dokuz Taş (Nine Stones)

Turkey

Dokuz Taş is a traditional Turkish strategy and intelligence game played by two people. The game is usually played on a simple board consisting of intersecting lines and nine pieces for each player. The aim is to align three stones in a row while preventing the opponent from doing the same.

Players place their stones on the board one by one in turns. When a player forms a line of three stones, they earn the right to remove one of the opponent’s stones from the board. After all stones are placed, players continue by moving their stones along the lines to create new combinations. The game ends when one player is reduced to two stones or cannot make a legal move.

Dokuz Taş has been played for generations in villages, schoolyards, and public gathering places throughout Türkiye. Because the game requires planning, attention, and tactical thinking, it has traditionally been valued as both an entertaining and educational activity.

The game helps improve strategic thinking, concentration, patience, and problem-solving skills. Since it requires only simple materials and can even be drawn on the ground with chalk, Dokuz Taş remains one of the most accessible traditional games in Turkish culture today.
