Topaç is one of the oldest traditional children’s games played in Türkiye. The game is played using a wooden spinning top and a string wrapped tightly around it. Players throw the top onto the ground by pulling the string quickly, making it spin for as long as possible.
In many regions of Türkiye, children competed to see whose top could spin the longest, move the fastest, or strike another player’s top without stopping. Different styles and local rules developed over time, making the game both competitive and entertaining.
Topaç was traditionally played in neighbourhood streets, village squares, and schoolyards, especially during spring and summer months. The tops were often handmade from wood by local craftsmen or family members, giving each one a unique shape and design.
The game helps develop hand-eye coordination, motor skills, patience, and concentration. Beyond being a toy, Topaç represents an important part of Turkish street game culture and childhood traditions passed down from generation to generation.
