Škuljanje

Slovenia

Škuljanje is a traditional Slovenian stone-throwing game that combines accuracy, tactics, and a little friendly competition. The game is especially associated with the Vipava Valley and the Primorska region of Slovenia, where it has been played for generations.

Players throw a flat stone, known as a škulja, towards a smaller round target called the balin. The aim is to land your stone as close to the target as possible. Players can also use their throws to knock an opponent’s stone out of a strong position, so a well-placed shot can quickly change the game.

Škuljanje can be played individually or in teams of up to five players. Points are awarded to the player or team with the stones closest to the balin at the end of each round. The first to reach 13 points wins.

Simple to learn but surprisingly tactical, Škuljanje is a brilliant game for all ages. Come and try it for yourself in Limerick — and see how close you can get to the target.
